Cavan's, Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Subaru WRC) won the Fels Point Hotel
Circuit of Kerry, the third round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship that
went down to the eighth and final stage.
They finished six seconds ahead of the Subaru of Monaghan's, Niall Maguire/Enda
Sherry. On that final stage, Elliott/Goodman overturned a six second deficit to
clinch their third win of the current Dunlop series. They now lead
Maguire/Sherry by six points after three rounds of the campaign. It was also
the third occasion that Elliott has won the Kerry event.
Local Kerry driver, Mike Quinn in a Ford Escort, co-driven by Grainne McEnery,
took a sensational third place.
In Group N, that also went down to a final stage decider, Clonakilty duo, Kevin
and Martin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) took the category victory ahead of early
leaders, Garry Jennings/David Moynihan (Mitsubishi), who endured clutch problems
on the final stage.
Kevin Barrett set the best time on the opening stage, Mount Eagle, his Subaru
WRC was two seconds faster than that of Niall Maguire's car with reigning Dunlop
champion, Patrick Elliott, a further four seconds behind in third spot having
lost a few seconds when he spun at a hairpin junction. Darren Gass in the
McKinstry hired Subaru WRC occupied fourth and local hero, Mike Quinn in a Mk. 2
Ford Escort, held an impressive fifth place.
Elliott set the pace on the second stage and at the Tralee service halt, where
he shared the lead with Maguire, the Cavan driver remarked that he wasn't happy
with his level of commitment. Meanwhile, second placed Maguire admitted he was
a little too cautious in places. Kevin Barrett, six seconds behind the leading
duo, was quite content with his performance.
Darren Gass in fourth place, lost almost half a minute on the final junction of
the second test when he spun his Subaru.
Quinn continued to power his Escort through the stages where he set a scorching
pace to hold fifth. Garry Jennings, who led the Group N category, reckoned his
Mitsubishi was flooding the plugs, a repeat of the problem on the opening round
in Nenagh. Alan Ring, on his first outing since Rally Ireland, was in seventh
place - four seconds behind Jennings. Thomas Fitzmaurice (Mitsubishi) was next
in classification, the current Group N series leader reckoned his car was down
on power. Elsewhere, Donie O'Sullivan had a slight misfire in his Proton Satria
S2000 car; Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) reckoned he made an incorrect tyre choice
and Brian O'Mahony (Renault Clio S1600) endured a big overshoot on the second
stage.
Gass showed a fine turn of speed on the third and fourth stages but spun and
lost ten seconds on the sixth test. The Armagh driver moved to third - 12
seconds behind rally leader, Patrick Elliott, who stalled and lost precious
seconds on S.S. 5. Kevin Barrett retired when a wheel sheared off his Subaru on
S.S. 3.
Meanwhile, Niall Maguire reckoned he was too cautious on some sections of the
stages, however, he was only a second behind Elliott - the Monaghan driver had
actually moved into a six second lead after the completion of S.S. 3; Elliott
then cut the deficit to three seconds on S.S. 4.
Not even a broken hydraulic pipe, that rendered the handbrake ineffective, could
deter Quinn, who moved into fourth place.
In Group N, Garry Jennings retained the lead but a charging Kevin Kelleher
closed to within two seconds of the Fermanagh man, Kelleher's tyre choice on the
loop of three stages paid dividends. Jennings overcame the misfire problem by
not switching off the engine prior to the stage starts, however, he admitted he
couldn't find a good rhythm on S.S. 5. Alan Ring (Mitsubishi) was untroubled in
seventh spot - 22 seconds behind Kelleher. The top ten also included Donie
O'Sullivan (Proton), Des Moore (Escort) and the Mitsubishi of Thomas
Fitzmaurice, that continued to suffer from a lack of power. Elsewhere, Brian
O'Mahony (Renault Clio) slipped down to fifteenth when his Renault Clio lost
brakes; Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi) retired and Sean Flanagan (Subaru)
crashed out.
Maguire was quickest through S.S. 6 and moved two seconds ahead of Elliott. On
the penultimate test, he gleamed four seconds and entered the final stage with a
six second lead. Gass retired after the completion of S.S. 6 when his Subaru
broke a suspension strut. His retirement promoted Quinn to third overall.
Brian O'Mahony (Renault Clio) retired with an electrical problem. Having moved
up to eleventh overall, Paul Elliott was forced out when his Mitsubishi
developed transmission problems.
On the final stage, Elliott took a dramatic victory, his tyre choice proving to
be the difference. It was heartbreak for Maguire, who is six points adrift of
Elliott in the race for the title.
Quinn took an incredible third while Kelleher, having drawn level with Jennings
on the penultimate test, came through to take the Group N victory over Jennings,
who had clutch trouble on the final test.
Alan Ring came through to take sixth ahead of Des Moore (Escort), Thomas
Fitzmaurice (Mitsubishi), Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) and Ed Synan, who overcame
brake problems to take the final spot in the top ten. Fitzmaurice retains his
lead in the Patterson's Rally News Group N award. Donie O'Sullivan (Proton
Satria) finished eleventh.
