Adventure Seekers, Treasure Keepers

History & Heritage

Kerry's rich history and culture goes back millenia and is reflected throughout the ancient walking trails, places our famous ancestors travelled and all around us in the ruins, archaeological sites, castles, houses and historic sites that offer us a glimpse of our past. Our museums and visitor centres bring to life the voices from history through educational and emotional exhibitions.

Famous Figures

From Daniel O'Connell to Janie McCarthy, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty and Tom Crean, Kerry's men and women have made their mark on the world stage. Throughout the county, you will find tributes to these people of courage and determination whether they impacted on peace and Irish independence, WWII heroes or pioneers of exploration.

Step into the Past

Some of Kerry’s historic houses, like the magnificent nineteenth century Victorian Muckross House mansion, set against the stunning beauty of Killarney National Park, are open to visitors, and historic sites in ruins can be viewed from stunning vantage points or as you make your way along Kerry's many tracks and trails. Ionad an Bhlascaoid on the Dingle Peninsula, part of the newly formed Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí, to witness the poetry of the islanders living on the Great Blasket over one hundred years ago or the evocative recreation of the islanders' living spaces and currach boats.
