A Storytelling Heritage
The Mantle is a community arts project at Rossbeigh, Co. Kerry, exploring the ecologies & mythologies of the strand and surrounding coastline through various storytelling practices. From 10th August to 7th September 2024, a series of free public events will take place by the beach every Saturday, each guided by a different mode of storytelling. The project is supported by Creative Ireland.
From informal gatherings to biodiversity walks, performances & art making workshops, this programme invites members of the local community and all those with enduring or newformed connections to Rossbeigh to come together and pick up the storytelling mantle, so to speak. Join us to listen, share, & help set the stories of Rossbeigh back into the place.
Rossbeigh strand is known for its mythical associations with Tír na nÓg. The aura of this particular story reminds us that the place is steeped in tales. The participative events planned aim to gather these local stories, in whichever forms they happen to resurface - told, written, sung, passed down, encountered, divined. They could even be objects, washed up here along the shoreline. By bringing these stories together and experimenting with different ways of circulating them, we hope to create a community resource for sharing knowledge about this shapeshifting coastal area.
Myths, Music & Place
The first event is based on the Irish tradition of Gathering & Storytelling, and participants will be invited to share stories about Rossbeigh – from folk tales to family histories or memories of particular events. Whether your connection to Rossbeigh goes back generations or this place has more recently become home, your story is part of Rossbeigh’s story.
The second event on 17th August from 6-7pm and is focused on Mythology, Folklore & Music. This session will be led by Gail and Thomas (aka Anamciar, Spirit of Kerry), who have worked together in the entertainment and tourism sectors for a number of years. Moving between words and music, different forms of storytelling, this event will explore the role of language(s) in our sense of place, attending to names and their translations, as well as local lore. Thomas will share his 2019 publication 'Kerry Dreamtime', which gathers stories from across the Reeks District, including Ros Beithe and the wider Loch na dTrí gCaol.
A digital copy of the book will be made available to everyone following the event. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a demonstration of traditional instruments, including uilleann pipes, harp, fiddle, bodhran, spoons and whistles.
COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS & SUSTAINABILITY
The third event will be a Guided Biodiversity Walk on 24th August. This experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the coastal ecosystems of the area and learn about the local biodiversity. Jasmine McCarthy, Plant scientist and Naturalist will share insights into the habitats, flora, fauna and the environment of Rossbeigh, highlighting the importance of preserving these natural habitats. The event aims to educate and inspire the community about the importance of coastal ecosystems and their role in environmental sustainability. It’s a chance to connect with nature, learn something new, and understand the significance of biodiversity in our local area. Advance registration is required for this workshop due to limited group size. Suitable for ages 12+. We will meet at the playground, Rossbeigh Strand. The walk will last approximately one hour. Please dress for the outdoors and wear appropriate footwear as there is some uneven ground.
On Saturday 31st August join in on a community beach clean followed by an art & writing workshop led by local artist Emily Fitzell. Working with objects gathered from Rossbeigh strand, you will be guided through a series of prompts exploring the eco poetics of storytelling. Together we will pay close attention to the ecosystems of Rossbeigh, tuning into the fabric of this coastal environment. In doing so, this workshop seeks to expand our sense of both what stories can be and how we might listen to them.
As participants in this workshop, your contributions will form part of a community mantle that will be presented the following weekend as part of a final performance event on Rossbeigh Strand. Beach Clean will take place from 10am, meeting at the picnic area, and workshop will run until approx. 1pm. Booking required as numbers for the workshop are limited.
RETURNING STORIES TO THE STRAND
To conclude the summer programme at Rossbeigh, all are welcome to join in on the finale event on the beach for the final performance event on Saturday 7th September at 1pm, where the stories will be returned to the strand through collective song & movement. For this event we’re collaborating with Amano Miura, a singer, songwriter, poet and activist producing work in English and Irish. Born in Kyūshū and raised in Kerry, her work is inspired by the earth, love, justice, cultural fluidity and the nuances of language(s) spoken and unspoken. She writes across styles and genres including free form poetry and spoken word, as well as folk, pop and electronic music.
