Castleisland

Castleisland is a hidden gem of a town, with its rich history and heritage, warm community spirit, and picturesque surroundings.

Castleisland has a story to tell.  The historical town, located in East Kerry, has roots dating as far back as 1220 with remnants of a Norman castle still visible in the town.  The locals take great pride in Castleisland’s location in the heart of the ‘Sliabh Luachra’ region, a culturally rich and historically significant area spanning across parts of County Kerry, County Cork, and County Limerick. Sliabh Luachra is renowned for its unique and distinctive cultural heritage, particularly in the realms of music, dance, and language.

Though steeped in history and culture, Castleisland is not a town that stands still.  It is a bustling town, and a firm favorite with all shoppers, with a fantastic selection fashion, footwear and gift shops.  Whether you're searching for fashion or crafts, or looking to decorate your house with lighting, furniture, and soft furnishings, all are located within easy access.   After a day of shopping, treat yourself to the delicious offerings at one of the town's charming cafes or restaurants. Traditional Irish cuisine, fresh seafood, and hearty pub grub are all on the menu, ensuring there's something for everyone's taste.

Castleisland has a rich sporting heritage that reflects the passion and dedication of its residents towards various sporting and recreational activities.  Within a 2km radius you’ll find Gaelic football, basketball, boxing, tennis and badminton courts, state of the art athletics and soccer facilities, as well as rugby and pitch and putt.

Castleisland is an attractive location as a touring base for Kerry, with plenty of amenities on its door step.  Crag Cave, ‘Ireland’s most exciting show cave’ is located here; Gleanageety Walksways, with trails for families and advanced walkers, is close by. The geography and the landscape of the area make it unique and a sanctuary for wildlife.  If its music you’re after, there is the annual Padraig O’Keeffe traditional music festival or annual World Fiddle Day in neighbouring Scartaglen, as well as regular weekend music sessions in the local pubs.
