One of Kerrys Greenways

Listowel to Limerick

Beginning in the vibrant heritage town of Listowel and winding through gentle countryside to the charming town of Abbeyfeale, the Listowel to Limerick Greenway offers 16 km of rolling hills, river valleys, and peaceful rural landscapes. This beautiful section of the Kerry Greenways traces the valley of the River Feale, passing through woodland corridors, fern-lined cuttings, and tranquil stretches that reveal the natural beauty of North Kerry.

For visitors looking to explore further, the route seamlessly links with the Limerick Greenway at Abbeyfeale, extending the experience into County Limerick. From here, walkers and cyclists can continue through over 50 km of uninterrupted Greenway, taking in the welcoming market towns of Newcastle West, Rathkeale, and beyond.

This Greenway follows the former Great Southern & Western Railway, a historic line that once connected West Limerick and North Kerry, supporting trade, travel, and daily life through key towns such as Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale. Listowel was a major junction, famously linking to the unique Lartigue Monorail that served Ballybunion until 1924, while at Ballingrane Junction, the line branched toward the busy port at Foynes. Passenger services ceased in 1963, with goods traffic continuing into the 1970s before the line closed fully in 1977 — leaving behind a rich railway legacy now revived as a modern, scenic trail.

Whether you are walking, cycling, or simply soaking in the countryside, the Listowel to Limerick Greenway offers a peaceful, immersive journey through nature, local culture, and a fascinating past.
