Tralee comes alive each year to truly welcome Chinese New Year, bringing people from all backgrounds together.
Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture. With a history spanning over 4,000 years, it marks the start of the lunar calendar and symbolises renewal, family togetherness, and hope for good fortune. Traditionally celebrated with food, music, dance, and storytelling, it is a time to honour heritage while embracing new beginnings. In Tralee and across Kerry, the festival has grown into a vibrant annual community event. Families, newcomers, and residents come together to share in the festivities, creating joyful spaces where cultures meet and friendships form. It reflects how Kerry embraces diversity, learning from one another, and celebrating what makes the county unique and inclusive.
Key activities & Traditions of Chinese New Year
This year’s 21st February celebrations bring colour and energy to the heart of Tralee, with events happening across the town centre and surrounding cultural spaces. One of the main highlights is the dragon dance, a dynamic performance symbolising strength, good fortune, and protection from evil spirits. Joining it for the first time this year is the lion dance, which adds even more excitement and spectacle. Families can enjoy hands-on workshops at Kerry County Museum, where children can learn about Lunar New Year traditions through crafts, storytelling, and interactive activities. The museum also presents a photography exhibition featuring artists with strong links to China, offering a visual exploration of culture, heritage, and shared human stories. Visitors can enjoy traditional music and dance performances on the streets of Tralee, along with authentic Chinese cuisine, bringing centuries-old customs to life.
Chinese New Year is rich in symbolism and traditions. The dragon and lion dances are believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits, while the festival is also a time for families to gather, share meals, and celebrate the year ahead. Storytelling plays a key role, passing down legends such as Nian the Beast, helping children and visitors alike learn about Chinese heritage. Traditional foods eaten during the festival often carry symbolic meaning, representing luck, longevity, and prosperity. In Tralee, these traditions are brought to life in a way that is fun, interactive, and accessible for all ages, creating a meaningful cultural experience for everyone.
CELEBRATING INCLUSIVITY AND COMMUNITY
Chinese New Year in Tralee is more than a festival — it is a celebration of Kerry’s inclusive spirit. People of all ages and backgrounds come together to share traditions, make connections, and celebrate diversity in a welcoming community setting. Supported by Kerry County Council, local businesses, and community partners, the festival reflects a shared belief that cultural celebrations enrich life in Kerry and strengthen community bonds.
At the heart of the celebrations is a dedicated group of volunteers who make the festival possible each year. Led by Lei Zhang (Chair), alongside Chris Sun (Event Coordinator and MC), Yaming Lin (Treasurer), Zulian Weng (Support), and Hailing Jiang (Dance Teacher), this volunteer team plays a vital role in sustaining the Chinese community in Kerry. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and collective effort help keep Chinese language and culture alive in rural Kerry, ensuring the festival remains both meaningful and accessible for the wider community.
