Killarney Executive Tour Co. has officially unveiled its newest addition to the fleet – a modern Hop-On Hop-Off Red Bus designed to elevate visitor experiences in one of Ireland’s most iconic landscapes while significantly reducing environmental impact.

The official launch took place at the historic setting of Ross Castle, marking an important milestone for the company as it continues to evolve its services in line with sustainable tourism goals.

Killarney Executive Tour Co. has played a central role in shaping guided transport experiences around Killarney for decades, offering visitors an accessible way to explore key landmarks such as Ross Castle and the wider National Park. Founder Pat Moynihan, who remains actively involved in the day-to-day running of the business and continues to drive the Red Bus himself, reflects on how the company began and evolved over the past decades.

Reflecting on the journey, he explains:

“When we first started, it was something completely new for Killarney. There was no real model for a service like this in the area, so it took time and a lot of persistence to build trust and get people on board. I spent years driving the routes myself, talking to visitors, and learning what worked. It wasn’t always easy, but I always believed there was value in giving people a way to truly experience the National Park without needing their own transport. Over the years we’ve had to change and improve how we operate. We moved from earlier vehicles to lower-emission buses as standards changed, and now we’re at a point where sustainability isn’t just a goal — it’s part of how we have to operate every day.” - Pat Moynihan

While the open-top experience remained popular with visitors, operational and environmental considerations gradually influenced the shift towards more modern, sustainable transport solutions. That same mindset now underpins the latest investment: ensuring the business continues to evolve in line with environmental expectations while maintaining a high-quality visitor experience.

A More Sustainable Way to Explore Killarney

The latest addition to the fleet reflects that ongoing shift. The vehicle incorporates Euro 6 engine technology, significantly reducing harmful emissions compared to older diesel systems, alongside AdBlue technology to further reduce nitrogen oxide output. It also runs on HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a renewable diesel alternative produced from sustainable feedstocks. This fuel can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel. Together, these advancements represent a meaningful step toward reducing the environmental footprint of sightseeing operations within the National Park, while maintaining reliability and comfort for visitors.

Sustaining the landscape that sustains tourism

The introduction of cleaner transport options reflects a broader recognition within Killarney’s tourism sector: the long-term success of the industry is directly tied to the protection of the natural environment it depends on.

By investing in lower-emission technology and renewable fuels, Killarney Executive Tour Co. is reinforcing its commitment to preserving the landscape that attracts visitors from around the world.

At the same time, the collaboration with O’Callaghan’s Coaches highlights the importance of local partnerships in delivering practical, scalable solutions to sustainability challenges in regional tourism.
